Bytes are despatched in packets (by way of the async serial port) with every packet terminated by an ETX (End of Text) control character.
Some older terminals haven't any hardware movement [what is control cable](https://trello.com/w/lionelectriccab "what is control cable") while others used a wide assortment of various pins on the serial port for this. For computer systems and terminals (both DTE kind tools) the RTS pin sends the flow control sign to the CTS pin (Clear To Send) on the opposite end of the cable.
